CEA Saltillo Summer Camp 2008: Experience camp outside the classroom

Children of any age are welcome, but ages 10 and below must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. Ages 11-15 must be accompanied by an adult, preferably their parent/guardian, or immediate relative, but teachers may choose to bring this age student and be responsible for them.

High School students (entering grades 9-12) are welcome to come without parents, but high expectations, maturity, and responsibility are the norm with CEA.

CEA Saltillo Summer Camp: All ages are welcome!

Participants need to arrive Thursday, Friday, or Saturday prior to the Summer Session. A special orientation will be held on Saturday to determine prior learning and to assist with procedures, registration (selection of workshops – sports, music, theatre, cooking, etc), and housing.

The moment these participants arrive in Saltillo, the director and her assistant will work with the students and their family to learn necessary conversational Spanish in order to communicate with the family and to manage transportation. A “Cheat Sheet” will be sent ahead of time along with a list of useful websites.

On Sunday all Youth Camp participants will be transported to a Rancho near Saltillo to start their Spanish Immersion in real-life situations. They will work primarily in groups and all professors will be bi-lingual! This is a really fun way to learn – doing activities you REALLY like to do! This enables each student to learn what they WANT and need to learn in context. It is Rigorous, Relevant, and the students build trusting Relationships with their professors and with new friends learning the same things.

Students will rotate throughout the week on a schedule like at a camp they may attend in the states: breakfast, 1st workshop rotation, songs and games, lunch, 2nd and 3rd workshop rotations, free time, dinner, Workshop exploration (allows them to see what other groups are doing, enabling them to choose their 2nd and 3rd week workshops). Special trips will be made with the entire group on the weekends that are specially designed to entertain youth! Most adults would prefer to save the horse riding, water park, hiking, for back home or avoid it at all costs wherever they are. Not so with youth and teens! They want to be doing fun activities all the time!

When students return to Saltillo for the 2nd and 3rd weeks, they will have already selected their workshop options, but will be afforded more free time with their family. Some workshops will continue with different topics (cooking, sports, theatre, arts & crafts, nature, etc), but some will be held for the first time (comic books, cinema, creative writing, etc).

CEA Saltillo: 2006 participants

Participants’ last formal day will be Friday. There will be a huge super-fiesta Friday evening, spotlighting the many products the students have produced: dramas presented, piñatas broken, songs sung, instruments played, food eaten, games played, arts displayed, and music, dancing and fun. It is the culmination of three weeks of fun!

Participants will be recognized at the fiesta for their unforgettable time spent in Saltillo with a certificate and group picture.
